BBC: Weapons of Mass Surveillance

Generative graphics for a documentary

May 2017

“Middle Eastern governments are using high tech mass surveillance tools to monitor their citizens. Western companies, including Britain’s largest weapons manufacturer, BAE, are among those selling surveillance technology to these governments.┬áThe trade is attracting criticism from human rights organizations who question whether a British company should be selling such equipment, much of it classified, to repressive regimes in the Arab world.”

For this project, a generative, real-time custom graphics software was commissioned in order to visualize a large scale mass surveillance technology. The software consists of a real-time network simulation in which a handful of nodes become marked, or infected (in red). These nodes will subsequently infect their neighbours and eventually the entire network. This simulation software was developed as part of a creative process which occurred in parallel to the film’s production.
