COLONY type-C

COLONY type-C is a variant of the sandPile Cellular Automata algorithm, created by deliberately ignoring its implied law of energy conservation in order to simulate a system in non equilibrium. It exhibits diverse, high order emergent phenomena such as fractals, hierarchical formations, pathfinding agents and other types of self organization patterns. Tiny changes to the simple transition rule of each cell result in massive changes to system behaviour, often with unique characteristics to some particular changes. The latest version is implemented in GLSL, allowing very large systems to run on consumer grade machines at interactive speeds.
